The Root of the Fear of Guns

Knotted Gun Sculpture

I tend to find that the people who are the most afraid of guns are the ones who have spent the least amount of time with them. This fear seems, for most logical people, to be a lack of experience. With fewer parents of the previous generation teaching their kids how to shoot and the ability to be competent with a firearm less and less necessary for people to survive, firearms use just went down.

Personally I find that sane people who spend some time around firearms and better yet, go shooting, warm up to the idea of owning guns and using them. I’ve seen people go from unsure and afraid of guns to far more confidant and willing to try them out after only a bit of instruction. Once you get someone to actually fire a gun and learn the fundamentals of gun safety then they stop being afraid and start having fun. Below you can see this very principle in action, with five gun control activists, who don’t know the first thing about guns, actually shooting them. If you look carefully you can see some of the Hollywood myths at play and the involuntary smiles that they all get after shooting.
